Tour Far North Queensland
Rainforest, Outback, Mountains, Waterfalls and Reef
Cairns June 2018
Far North Queensland has an amazing diversity of attractions. With a short trip, you can travel from tropical rainforest to the dry outback or out to the dazzling Great Barrier Reef. It is the only place in the world where you can step from one world heritage listed area, straight into another.
Based in Cairns, we have two tours exploring some of the incredible photography opportunities in a way that average day trips can not. The tours have been designed with photography in mind but could be enjoyed by anyone. You will be traveling with other photographers with an itinerary that aims to give you ample time to photograph each location. The itineraries will include some special photographic additions to create unique photo opportunities that day tours would not offer to you. The tours will be led by Andrew Merefield, an experienced professional photographer and a photographic educator who will be available to assist you to get the best of our locations.
Both tours will cover many different aspects of this area with each looking at the area with a slightly different focus. The first tour is designed to look at the diversity of the landscapes, the second tour will be geared a little more to capturing some photographs of the wildlife that the area has to offer. Both tours give you a great insight into the many different facets of the region, regardless of your photographic desires. You can choose either tour or combine them into a grand tour that covers it all.
Tour One - Touring June 4th - 8th
From outback caves to ancient rainforests, the aquatic wonderland of the Great Barrier Reef and the lush green downs of the southern tablelands, in far north Queensland, nature has created an area that is a photographers playground. In exploring the area, our itinerary offers you as much of the diversity of rich landscapes as we can while still giving you time to relax, enjoy and photograph the experience.
This tour will take us into the arid outback to explore the limestone caves and outcrops around Chillagoe that originated from a coral reef hundreds of millions of years ago. Visit the Atherton Tablelands, with remnants of a luscious rainforest, pristine lakes nestled in ancient volcanic craters and lots, and lots of waterfalls. Relax as we sail out to the Great Barrier Reef to snorkel amongst the coral and tropical marine life of this natural wonder. Explore one of the earth's oldest and most diverse ecosystems, the Daintree Rainforest where the rainforest meets the reef. Travel to Paronella Park, a castle built in the rainforest by one man, the buildings and gardens create interesting vistas by day but are even more interesting when they are lit up by floodlights at night.
Tour Two - Touring June 11th - 15th
Far North Queensland's diversity is not limited to its landscapes. Wildlife abounds in the area, offering a great range of opportunities to anyone interested in photographing wildlife in their natural environment. From mammals such as rock wallabies, tree kangaroos and platypus to estuarine crocodiles and snakes to birds and butterflies of many sizes and shapes, some of these elusive creatures are found in few other parts of the world.
Explore tropical rainforest and estuaries above and below the water, first cruising Daintree River at dawn before drifting down a clear rainforest stream with a mask and snorkel. Learn about the indigenous heritage of the area from the Kuku Yalanji people at Mossman Gorge. Travel to the Atherton Tablelands to stalk platypus and Lumholtz's Tree Kangaroos including a trip into the rainforest for some nocturnal spotlighting. Cruise to a bird sanctuary on a coral cay in the midst of the Great Barrier Reef. Capture images of the multitude of birds and mammals found surrounding the manmade Mareeba Wetlands and visit Cape Tribulation to explore a private rainforest reserve and cruise through the mangroves of this world heritage area.
